• This book is written from the first person point of view and in the past tense, but the Prelude is a poem written by Jones in the present tense.
• In the Prelude, Jones includes a poem of his titled Elegy with Grown Folks' Music.
• The poem is about Jones' mother, who dances unaware of anyone watching her.
• In the poem, Jones's mother is like a young girl again, with box braids, someone he can not fully know despite the fact that she is his mother.
• In Part One, Jones begins the section with a quote from David Mura about being drawn to your own feelings even if you do not know exactly what they are.
