1. In what way is the novel How to Be Both a piece of interactive fiction?
Both the electronic and printed versions of Ali Smith's novel How to Be Both contain interactive features. In the e-book version, the reader is presented with a short piece of free verse containing lines such as, "Who says stories reach everybody in the same order?" (1) After reading the last line, which states, "The choice is yours," the reader must click on one of the two versions of the novel, described in the piece of verse as "Eyes, camera" and "Camera, eyes" (1). The printed versions, on the other hand, are widely known to have been printed by the publisher (at the request of Smith) in two different incarnations: one beginning with the section entitled Eyes and the other beginning with the part called Camera.
