Objective
Students will investigate Ali Smith’s purpose in using an epigraph to begin the narrative of How to Be Both and will make predictions about its possible connection to the thematic messages within the text.
Regardless of which version the reader chooses at the outset of the novel How to Be Both, the epigraph section of the text remains in the same place. Thus, the reader is able to surmise that the epigraph’s themes will likely be reflected within both halves of the novel. The epigraph section contains a total of four different quotes, all of which collectively introduce many of the novel’s major themes, such as the way in which destruction is actually a catalyst for creation.
