Lesson 1 (from Section 1: Chapters I-III)
Objective
Students will explore the historical and cultural context of Tolstoy's "How Much Land Does a Man Need?"
Tolstoy's story is concerned with the disparity between the lives of the rich and poor in nineteenth century Russia. Although inequality is hardly unique to nineteenth century Russia, the story will be more engaging to students when they understand its context more fully. This lesson offers students background on the economic and social conditions of Tolstoy's time.
Lesson
Small Group Research and Sharing: Divide class into groups of four to six. Ask that each group create an online presentation that all group members can edit. Give the groups ten minutes' time to find and compile a brief informal presentation on traditional Russian culture consisting of photographs, captions, and citations. When they finish, give the class time to view a few presentations.
