Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the author’s background and other works. Students should research the author's biography and be able to explain what aspects of her personal experiences contributed to her choice of subject matter and writing style.

Class Discussion: Who is the author of How It Went Down? Where did she grow up? What other kinds of work has she done? What is her online presence like? Does she have her own website? How old is she? What did she study in college? What other kinds of work has she written, and how was the subject matter of that work similar to or different from that of How It Went Down?
Small Group Activity: Divide students into small groups and ask them to create lists of facts about the author’s life. These can include her early life...
