• Belinda appears upset and must force herself to look at the coffin.

• As Belinda looks on, the men call out for hammers to be brought.

• Three little boys of no more than six or seven years old scamper off to retrieve the tools.

• The men use the hammers to smash off the coffin's handles, which they all know will fetch good prices at the market.

• Though Belinda knows that the procedures and light atmosphere are usual at funerals, the blows start to feel as if they are slamming against Belinda's skull.
