Objective: In Act 1, the setting for the play is a dilapidated hotel in Baltimore, Maryland. The hotel is located relatively close to the railroad, as indicated by the Girl's constant observance of the train whistles. This lesson will discuss this setting.

1) Class Discussion: Describe the setting.

Small Group Activity: At what do the constant observances of train whistles by the Girl hint? How do you know this hotel, at one point, had been thriving? How is it now?

Class Discussion: Share the thoughts of the small groups about the setting and what the hotel may have been like in the past.

Homework: Could this play take place in another location? Why or why not? If so, what would be another good setting for it?
