Joan Bauer is one of the better known young adult fiction writers. The objective of this lesson is to learn more about Joan Bauer as the author of "Hope Was Here" -- and why it's important to learn about the author of a text.
Lesson
1) Focusing Exercise: Have students write for 5 minutes in response to the following prompt: "Why is knowing information about the author important when reading a text?" Collect their responses.
2) Class Lecture: Lecture the class for 5-10 minutes with some information about Joan Bauer. Who is she? What is she known for? What has her life been like? What was his childhood like (especially after the divorce of her parents)? What inspired her to write "Hope Was Here"? What has happened over the years in regard to the book's popularity?
