Novels are classified by genre, or type of literary work. From the first chapter of Honor's Splendour, it is apparent that this novel is part of the historical romance genre. This lesson defines historical romance and identifies the historical romance novel elements within the novel.
Lesson
1) Class Discussion: Discuss what the class knows about the category of romance novels. In the romance novel, these things are a must: the main characters meet at the beginning of the story, the plot involves the main characters as they develop a romantic relationship, and the conflict and climax is directly related to the romantic relationship. Romance novels have an emotionally satisfying and optimistic ending. They reward the good and punish the bad.
