Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 42, "The Photograph" - "Baba"))
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is for students to analyze the symbolism of the photographs in Nima's apartment. The photos Nima's mother Aisha has chosen to display heavily feature Ahmed, Nima's father, who died before Nima was born. Nima is fascinated with the idea of Ahmed, who she knows little about and yearns for a greater connection to. The photos represent the idealized - but, as the reader later finds out - unrealistic version of her father that Nina fashions from the captured images.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What does Nima know about Ahmed, her father? Why does Aisha display so many pictures of Ahmed around the apartment? How does Nima seem to think her father's death affected her mother's and her own path in life?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group of students to create a mind map...
