Objective

Chapter 1 introduces us to Merlin and gives us a brief overview of Arthur's story. The objective of this lesson is to discuss Merlin and Arthur in order to gain a better understanding of the characters the author is presenting.

Lesson

1. For class discussion: Who is the story's main character? Is it Merlin or Arthur? What do we know about each? How does the author present each?

2. Groups: Have the students break into groups of three or four and discuss: What can we tell about Merlin's character from the story he shares with the goat herd and King Uther's reaction to him?

3. Individual: Based on what we know so far, are King Uther's perceptions about Merlin right or wrong? What have we read so far that makes you believe this? Write your answer as a one-page answer.

4. Homework: Read Part 1, Chapters 3 and 4. Create a journal entry describing...
