Objective
In the first two chapters, readers receive an introduction to the strange universe that Douglas Adams has created in The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. The actions of characters often make little or no sense, and this helps create the overall theme of confusion and absurdity in everyday life.

1 - Class discussion: What words describe the characters of this book? What role does Arthur Dent play, compared to those around him? Does Arthur understand what is going on around him? What does Ford mean when he says the world is about to end?
