Objective
Objectives for this first lesson on Hillbilly Elegy include introducing students to the memoir’s author and genre, analyzing the narrative style of the Prologue, and researching and discussing the stereotypes and realities of Appalachia and the Rust Belt. Hillbilly Elegy, a memoir by J. D. Vance, describes the author’s life growing up in poverty and his eventual emergence as an upwardly mobile, Ivy League-educated successful author and lawyer.
Lesson
Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on Vance and genre of Hillbilly Elegy. What is a memoir? How do memoirs differ from autobiographies? How do they differ from fictional novels? What books has J. D. Vance written? Complete a brief paper or project detailing your findings.
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the Prologue of Hillbilly Elegy. After the reading, collaborate in conducting research on the stereotypes...
