Lesson 1 (from Prologue – Chapter 5)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore the exposition of Hidden Valley Road. Students will identify and analyze elements from the first five chapters in order to identify the central figures in the Galvin family, the Colorado setting, and potential conflicts and themes.
The beginning of Hidden Valley Road introduces the reader to Mimi and Don Galvin, their love of falconry, and their large family. The reader is introduced to themes involving mental illness and trauma. Finally, readers are introduced to potential conflicts, such as Donald’s internal conflict with himself as well as his external conflict with his younger brother Jim.

Class Discussion: Make some predictions about what will happen as Hidden Valley Road progresses. What potential conflicts do you see emerging as the situation involving the Galvin family progresses? What does Mimi desire, and what obstacles stand in her way...
