Prologue
• The following version of this book was used to create this Lesson Plan: Kolker, Robert. Hidden Valley Road. Doubleday, 2020.
• The book begins with a prologue that takes place in 1972 and is narrated by a third-person, objective narrator.
• As the prologue begins, Mary Galvin, who is seven years old, goes walking with her older brother Donald, who is 27.
• The narrator explains there “are ten children between Mary and Donald in age—twelve Galvin kids in all” (xiii) and notes that “[e]verything about Donald confounds Mary” (xiv).
• Donald’s erratic, often violent, behavior confuses and frightens Mary; at times, she is embarrassed that people know she is related to Donald.
• As they walk through the woods that lie behind their home, Donald agrees to let Mary tie him to a tree.
