Objective

Objective: Henry IV, Part 1 is part of a larger collection of plays written by Shakespeare about the long and tangled history of English ruling factions. The plot of this play follows Richard II and precedes Henry IV, Part 2 and Henry V. Today's objective will be to introduce the play by providing a historical context for Henry IV, Part 1.

1) Opening Introduction: Begin by giving an brief, overall description of the "War of the Roses," the long struggle between the houses of Lancaster and York, which resulted in a number of dramatic civil wars in England in the second half of the 15th century. Shakespeare began writing plays about this history with "The Tragedy of Richard II." Richard II was murdered by Henry (now Henry IV) just prior to the time Henry IV, Part 1 begins.
