Objective
From October of 1931 to February of 1932, the reader is introduced to the relationship between Nin and her husband, Hugo. Hugo did not appear to be as artistically inclined as his tempestuous wife, though he doted lavishly upon her. However, despite the outpouring of love from Hugo and her own insistence that she loved him dearly, Nin displayed a shocking amount of cold indifference toward him. Her reaction to Hugo reading her account of an affair, as well as her belief that he should not be jealous of her relationship with Miller, displayed her confusion as why he would not want her to be faithful to him. Nin disclosed to her cousin that she frequently fell for weaker men so that she could dominate them, which suggested to the reader that Nin demanded control in all of her relationships.
