Lesson 1 (from Part I (Chapters 1 - 8))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze the significance of Lola's stories from the Philippines to Virgil's life. In the first section of the book, Lola and Virgil discuss many fantastical stories, myths, and legends from Lola's native Philippines that Lola often uses to impart an important lesson or parable to Virgil as he struggles with bullying, not fitting in with his family, and his own shy nature.

Class Discussion: Who is Virgil Salinas? How would you describe Virgil's personality? How does Virgil relate to his family members? Who is Lola? What is Virgil's relationship with Lola like? What kinds of stories do Lola and Virgil often talk about?
Small Group Activity: Divide the class into small groups and ask each group of students to make a chart titled "Lola's Stories." Students should divide the chart into the following headings: Story, Summary...
