Lesson 1 (from Chapters 1 - 8)
Objective
The objective of this lesson is to gain knowledge about Lewis Carroll’s original work, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, and its significance as a piece of classic literature. Heartless is the imagined backstory for the Queen of Hearts from Lewis Carroll’s Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Familiarity with Carroll’s work is important to the understanding of Heartless.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What do you know about Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland? How is the Queen depicted? Do you see similarities between Catherine and the Queen in this section of the novel?
Small Group Project: Divide the class into small groups and have them work together in their groups to research Lewis Carroll and Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland. Have each group prepare and deliver a presentation about Carroll, his works, and the importance of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland as a literary contribution.
