Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 57))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Smarsh's relationship with her mother Jeannie in Part I. Smarsh loves her mother fiercely but is always somehow aware that she was unplanned pregnancy - a mistake. Jeannie had Smarsh as a teenager and seemed somewhat cold and unaffectionate towards Smarsh, who always longed for her mother's love. Smarsh felt that her mother had the capacity for great love, but there was always a barrier between her and Jeannie.
