Chapter 1 introduces the reader to Yakov and his three roommates, all orphans who have been cared for by a man they call Uncle Misha in exchange for participating in multiple illegal activities to make money. The objective of this lesson will focus on character and the theme of disposable children.

Lesson

1) Class Discussion: The author introduces four orphan children who have been forced into illegal activities by their caretaker. In this chapter, the caretaker, Uncle Misha, sells the boys to two unknown characters, one of whom is presumed to be American. The boys are told they are to be adopted by American families, but the reader notices inconsistencies in the woman, Nadiya, that suggests this might not be true.
