Objective
In this lesson, the students will research the author’s background.
Kurt Vonnegut grew up in a small American town, worked on papers in high school and college, and served in the army during World War II. He wrote short stories, plays, novels, and non-fiction. Vonnegut died in 2007.

Class Discussion: Was this short story ahead of its time when it was written? How may war have influenced Vonnegut’s view of society? Is it necessary that an author’s background relates to their work?
Journal Activity: The editor of this short story collection, Sidney Offit, said that Vonnegut’s writing skewered political correctness. Explain what that means. Provide examples to support the statement.
Partner Activity: Work with a partner to come up with a list of 15 interview questions. Include questions about the author’s education, work experience, influences, other writing, and awards. Research the answer...
