Lesson 1 (from Section 1: "Active Shooter" through "Bruised")
Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to acquire background information on the fictionalized form of autobiographical essay commonly written by David Sedaris. Although many readers assume that Sedaris's autobiographical essays are factual, they are in truth somewhat loosely based on his actual memories and experiences. This lesson offers students some background on this type of essay, then asks them to consider the ethical ramifications of presenting quasi-fictional accounts as nonfiction as well as the purpose of blending the real and the fictional in this way.
