Balewa
Prime Minister of Nigeria, this figure is killed in a coup. He can be read as encapsulating the corruption of the colonialist puppet government that had been set up following nominal independence; in brief, he emblematizes the problems of partial independence.
Chiamaka “Baby”
The illegitimate child is adopted by the barren wife of the baby's father. In some ways, this child represents the lingering hope of those who survive the Biafran conflict.
Gowon
Successor to the deposed Prime Minister, this figure character appears but rarely in the novel. He is more a felt remote presence than an active character, yet his actions still drive much of the context that surrounds the novel’s plot.
Harrison
Servingman to another character, this character is the agent by which his boss' perfidy becomes known. He encapsulates another vision of the majority of Nigerians and erstwhile Biafrans than Ugwu and Jomo.
Jomo
