• A hooded figure steals a book from the Unseen University Library and takes it to a meeting of the esoteric Elucidated Brethren of the Ebon Night, where the members, led by the Supreme Grand Master, decide to summon a dragon by magic as part of a plot to overthrow the patrician and restore a monarchy to Ankh-Morpork.
• The tall, innocent and honest Carrot, who has been raised by the dwarfs who found him as a baby in a forest after his family had been killed by bandits, comes to the city to be with is own kind (humans) and join the Watch.
• Captain Vimes walks the streets of the city in a disillusioned, drunken stupor.
• A dragon appears momentarily in response to the Brethren's summons and kills a thief.
• Carrot, horrified by the corruption in the city, arrests the head of the Thieves' Guild, which prompts...
