Objective

Guantanamo Boy is a contemporary young adult novel by British author Anna Perera. Beginning six months after the events of 9/11, the novel follows fifteen-year-old Khalid Ahmed, an average and assimilated English teenager with parents from Turkey and Pakistan. In the course of the narrative, Khalid will be abducted and imprisoned in Guantanamo Bay, suspected of terrorism and brutally tortured. In this lesson, students will conduct research on the Reprieve organization and the events surrounding 9/11, and will identify and discuss the narrative point of view, setting, and protagonist introduced in Chapter 1 of Guantanamo Boy.
