Plant a Seed of Your Own

In "A Special Tree," Rakesh grows a tree from a cherry seed and finds out that nurturing something from its beginning to maturity gives him a special kind of satisfaction. For this activity, you will need a seed--you can buy seeds, of course, but you can also use the pit or seed of a piece of fruit: apples, cherries, avocados, peaches, and many other fruits will work. Once you have a seed, use the internet to find out how to start it growing. Keep a journal for three weeks in which you write down when you feed and water the plant and what you do to make sure it gets enough sunshine. Take a picture when it sprouts and take two more as it grows, and add these pictures to your journal.
