• The first story in the anthology, "A Special Tree," begins in the Himalayan foothills, with six-year-old Rakesh walking home from the bazaar, eating cherries.

• The cherries come from Kashmir, because the Himalayan soil is too rocky and the wind is too cold for fruit trees.

• Rakesh lives with his grandfather "on the outskirts of Mussoorie," near where a forest of "oak and deodar" begins (1).
