· Following the dedication and epigraph, the novel begins with a brief discussion of the eponymous great circle, offering a world map to illustrate that which features prominently in the novel.
· An excerpt from a logbook, dating to 4 March 1950 in Antarctica, follows, articulating what amounts to a final statement from its author, Marian Graves.
· The novel shifts to Los Angeles in 2014, with Hadley reminiscing about learning about Marian Graves “because one of my uncle’s girlfriends liked to dump me at the library when I was a kid” (9).
· Hadley, as yet unnamed in the novel, rehearses her early encounter with Marian’s book and her early life working and living in Hollywood with her uncle, Mitch.
