Objective
THE GRASS IS SINGING by Doris Lessing opens with the story of a murder. While the identity of the killer is no mystery, the circumstances of the murder are very mysterious indeed.
Lesson
1 - Class discussion: What is strange about the murder and the way the characters react to it? How does Charlie Slatter's reaction to the murder compare to that of Tony Marston? What kind of people were the Turners? What do you think Mary Turner did to make Slatter and the Sergeant act the way they did?
2 - Brainstorming: Each student brainstorms a list of possible reasons why Moses would kill Mary Turner.
