Lesson 1 (from "The Dialectic" - "Words and Music")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to Zadie Smith’s short story anthology Grand Union. Students will research the author, read “The Dialectic,” and identify and discuss the narrative and language styles of the work. The 19 stories that comprise Grand Union come from a variety of different narrative perspectives and reflect the thoughts and feelings of her multi-faceted characters. In “The Dialectic,” the limited-perspective narrator focuses on an unnamed woman who sits with her daughter on a beach and contemplates the search for the truth between two opposing ideas or beliefs.
Lesson
Group Activity: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each. As a group, read “The Dialectic.” Following the reading, discuss what has been established regarding the main character(s) of the story and how the story is told. What is notable about the language style used? What information is relayed through dialogue?
