Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to explore Roxane Gay’s background and personal interest in the subject matter reflected in the novel. Students will learn facts about the author, including previous works. Students will discuss how these facts may influence their reading of the short story "Graceful Burdens."

Class Discussion: Who is the author of "Graceful Burdens"? Where is she from? What year was the short story published? How was this work received by the public? What other works has the author written? How might the author’s background influence your reading of the book?
