Without knowledge of this culture and lifestyle, students may have trouble understanding some of the behaviors and decisions of the characters. The objective of this lesson is for students to learn more about the politics, culture, and people of the antebellum South.

Lesson

• Have each student prepare a poster presentation about life in the South before the Civil War. Students can focus on areas like politics, clothing, religion, or customs. Students can choose their own areas or can have a specific topic assigned to one or more students.

• Visit a plantation museum if one is available nearby. Have students write a report on what they learned at the museum.

• Have students create a website or presentation on a particular aspect of antebellum life, such as clothing, music, courtship, etc...
