Objective

Chapters 1 through 6- From the beginning of the book, the theme of death plays an integral role in the central conflict of the book and the actions of its characters. Here, death is the only thing on most characters' minds and their experiences with death greatly influence the way they interact with others and view the world. This lesson will discuss the concept of death that is presented in the book.

Lesson

1. Group Activity: Have the class split into groups of four and create a list of the characters in the Klein family and how each dealt with the death of Mrs. Klein and the seeming death of Ken. After your group completes the list have one member share your findings with the rest of class.
