Objective

In the first two chapters of this novel, a group of dissatisfied train workers is introduced. They are discussing the possibility of a strike, with some people unsure about the strike even on the morning they go on strike. The objective of this lesson is to compare and contrast the arguments for and against the strike.

1) Class discussion: What industry do the workers work in? Who runs the train companies? Why are the French running the African train companies? How else are the French involved in the Africans' lives? Why do the workers want to strike? What started these feelings? How does the narrator describe previous strikes? What makes some workers unsure about a strike? What happens when the workers have a meeting? Who speaks at the meeting? What message do the speakers convey? Who disagrees with this message? Why?
