• The story opens with Ivan Dmitrich Aksionov who owns two shops and a home in the town of Vladimir.
• In the past, Vladimir drank excessively, but once he married he cut back considerably.
• The day Aksionov was to leave for the Nizhny Fair, his wife pleaded with him to say because she had had a bad dream about him.
• In her dream, Aksionov returned home from his trip with a head full of grey hair.
• Aksionov does not take his wife’s concerns seriously, he even tells her that her dream was a sign of good luck.
• Aksionov assures his wife that he will sell all of his goods while away...
