Lesson 1 (from Part I (Pages 1 - 55))
Objective
The objective of this lesson is for students to analyze Nwoka's depiction of Ichulu as a polytheistic society and to explore how the village's belief in many Gods affects the interactions between its people. In Part I, Nwoka establishes Igbokwe or "dibia" as the village leader and arbiter of all things religious and medical. Igbokwe comes to conclude that Ichulu's recent devastating floods and rains, combined with Ijeoma's muteness and newfound ability to fly, means that two of Ichulu's main Gods - Chukwu and Ani - are in conflict. The villagers eventually end up choosing "sides" between the two Gods, leaving Ijeoma's family in the middle of the disagreements and tensions.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What does polytheism mean? How does Nwoka describe Ichulu as a polytheistic society? What kinds of problems and tensions arise in Ichulu due to the villagers' following of polytheism?
