• In the Prologue, the village of Ichulu had recently endured some terrible natural disasters, most notably flooding.
• The Igbokwe, or "dibia," was the village leader and medicine-man.
• The Ichulu people worshipped many gods, but one God, Chukwu, was their "Supreme Being."
• Ichulu people called Chukwu "chi" when "Chukwu became a friend" (3).
• Igbokwe thought that whoever had cursed Ijeoma, the child of villager Ofodile, as being mute had also cursed the entire village of Ichulu with the rains and floods.
• The villagers often shared groundnut or kola nut together when meeting, a bitter nut that reminded all of the shared sorrows and challenges of life.
