Objective
In "Goodbye, Daddy," the author's parents separate, with the father moving out of the family home. The objective of this lesson is to discuss the impact the loss of the father has on the family.
Lesson
1) What was the relationship of the author's parents like? Why did the father leave the family? How did this impact the family? What was the father's relationship with the family once he left? How did this change the author's perception of his father?
2) Debate. The author tries to convince his mother to let his father come back home. She tells him no, without explaining the details of their separation. Should the mother have explained to her children all the reasons the father left? Students should use other information from the chapter to back up their arguments.
