Objective
Students will explore the purpose of dystopian fiction.
Students are likely to have read examples of dystopian fiction and may already be familiar with the term. As less experienced readers, though, they may assume that dystopian fiction is truly about "other" or "future" worlds. This lesson familiarizes students with the role of dystopian fiction in commenting on our own, present reality.
Lesson
Class Discussion: What is a "dystopia"? What dystopian stories have you already read or seen in a movie or on T.V.? Are there dystopian video games? What do you think makes them so popular, even though they can be scary or depressing?
Reading Activity: Distribute copies of Andrea Ayres's article "How Authors Find Hope in Dystopia" (available online). Give students time to read.
