Section 1: "Ghoul" pages 1-18

• The story is told in the first person by Brian, a "Squatting Ghoul" (2).
• When the story opens, Layla is wheeling over a "Vat of Lunch," and the narrator is allowed a temporary break from appearing scary as he leans against a "plastiform wall meant to resemble human entrails" (2).
• Leonard, the senior Squatting Ghoul, is sitting on a plastiform Remorseful Demon, asking why the old are not served first.
• Brian tells him "Grieve on, foul beast," and is backed up by his friend Tim, a Feuding Ghoul (2).
• Lunch is a bowl of broth with a single Kit Kat in it.
• The following morning, Brian's Break Week begins.
• Brian and the others who are eligible for a break are moved via tram from their workhouse...
