• Act I begins and stage directions are provided.
• The play opens on a Sunday morning and at center stage is a large and opulent house.
• The Caretaker’s Wife performs tasks around the front of the house, such as sweeping the front steps and polishing the brass fixtures on the door.
• In front of the house, there is a public drinking fountain on one side and an “advertising column” (1) on the other.
• The Old Man, the antagonist within the play, sits upon a green bench nearby the advertising column, while the Lady in Black stands motionless on the staircase of the house.
• The Old Man has a white beard, white hair, spectacles...
