Objective
Students will make predictions about characterization and conflict in Chapter I, "Secrets."
The opening of the novel George can be confusing for younger readers; the protagonist is referred to by a "boy's" name but is gendered "she." If students are unclear about the premise, sorting out who "George" is and who "Melissa" is and understanding the nature of the protagonist's conflict will occupy attention better spent on thematic and literary aspects of the novel. Students will leave this lesson with the foundational knowledge necessary to successful reading of this text.
