Objective
Olivia views herself as too tall and unattractive to be happily married.
The objective of this lesson is to gain a better understanding of the main character's opinion of herself.
Lesson
1) Initiate a class discussion on Olivia's perception of herself. How does this mirror the perception many young women have of themselves? Suggest reasons for this.
2) Break the class into groups of two or three and have them discuss Olivia as a potential spouse to Malcolm. What does she offer him? Is there anything else? Why do you feel this way? Present this to the class.
3) In short essay form, discuss whether or not Olivia's opinion of herself would be visible to potential suitors. How would this affect their opinion of her? How would this influence her chances of marriage?
