• This novel is written in diary format in the first-person and mostly in the present-tense. Gabi Hernandez, a 17-year-old Mexican American girl, narrates.
• On July 24, Gabi recalls how she was named Gabriela after her grandmother, who did not want to meet her when she was born because her mother had gotten pregnant with her out of wedlock.
• When Gabi's grandmother had found out she was pregnant, she had beat her mother, who as 25 years old at the time.
• Every time Gabi goes out with a guy, her mother tells her, "ojos abiertos, piernas cerradas," which means "eyes open, legs closed" (7). That is the extent of any kind of sex talk Gabi has had with her mother.
