Objective
The objective of this Daily Lesson is to analyze the characterization of Tamaya in Chapter 1 of Fuzzy Mud. Adventure stories are much more engaging when the reader feels empathy for the characters as they face obstacles and peril. Tamaya is the first of the two main characters to be introduced and is the reader's entry point into engaging with the story. This lesson asks students to describe how Sachar uses both direct and indirect characterization to portray Tamaya and then asks them to think about what moves Sachar is making to construct a sympathetic character that readers will root for.

Research Activity: Give students time to look up definitions of direct and indirect characterization, flat and round characters, and static and dynamic characters. Then, ask them to answer the following questions:
