Chapters 1-3

• A girl begins to massage a man who is sunbathing next to a swimming pool. The girl is nervous of him because she knows if she repeats anything she hears while in his company, the man will execute her.

• The girl feels relieved when the telephone rings and the man goes inside to answer it.
• The man, whose name is Donavan Grant, answers to SMERSH, a branch of the Russian secret service. They want him to fly to Moscow.

• Grant flies to Moscow. On the way he thinks of his family. His mother died in childbirth and he was raised by an aunt.

• Grant thinks about how he used to kill women as they returned home from nights out. When he the officials became suspicious of him, he joined the Royal Corps.

• After the Royal Corps threw him out, Grant offered himself as a hired killer...
