Lesson 1 (from Prologue and Chapters 1, 2, 3, and 4)
Objective
Early on in "From Hell," the idea of hiding one's identity is introduced. During the Prologue, Abberline and Lees discuss that they were forced to take part in the concealment of Jack the Ripper's identity. In Chapter 1, Prince Albert is traveling incognito, passing himself off as Sickert's younger brother. However, the coverage of identities are no matters of simple deceit. Though the details are still vague at this point in the book, it is clear that Abberline and Lees would have been murdered had they not gone along with the deception. Prince Albert goes so far as to marry a shop-girl (who is ignorant of Albert being the prince), which results in her eventual imprisonment and forced lobotomy. This lesson will explore the theme of hiding identities and the effects it has on the surrounding characters and events.
