Objective
From Front Porch to Back Seat: Courtship in Twentieth-Century America is a history of the system by which American males and females engaged in and initiated sexual and social intimacy prior to marriage from 1900 to 1988. Beth Bailey, a social and cultural historian at Temple University, argues that the system of American courtship has changed dramatically over the past eighty years due to economic, social, and cultural forces. In this lesson, students are introduced to the book. They will research and discuss author Beth L. Bailey.
