Lesson 1 (from Forward, "Frightful Takes Off" - "The Wilderness Tests of the Eyases")
Objective
This lesson introduces students to the history, techniques, and tools of falconry. Students will also research author Jean Craighead George and will examine the two preceding books to Frightful’s Mountain in this series. In the Foreword to Frightful’s Mountain, Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. describes the impacts of Jean Craighead George’s works on him as an environmentalist and falconer. In the first chapter, “Frightful Takes Off,” the narrator establishes Frightful’s back-story and relates her relationship to Sam Gribley.
Lesson
Research Activity: Take time in class to conduct research on the history, techniques, and tools of falconry. When did falconry arise? How did the sport develop over time? How many falconers exist today?
Group Assignment: Assign students to groups of 3-4 each to read the Prologue of Frightful’s Mountain and to discuss their research from the previous assignment. As a group, students will...
